Bengal surpasses Rajasthan, Delhi to become India’s 3rd most popular destination for foreign tourists

Bengal has secured the third spot in India’s most popular tourist destinations for foreign visitors, ranking just behind Maharashtra and Gujarat. According to the latest report on foreign tourism, Bengal saw 2.71 million international visitors in 2023, accounting for 14.08% of the total foreign tourist arrivals in the country. This marks a significant improvement for the state, which was previously ranked sixth in 2013.

The surge in Bengal’s popularity among foreign tourists is largely attributed to the state's rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and improved infrastructure over the years. Bengal offers a mix of historical landmarks, vibrant festivals, and natural beauty, ranging from beaches to hill stations, attracting a broad spectrum of international travelers. In recent years, the state has made notable strides in enhancing its tourism appeal, with the state government emphasizing the promotion of tourism sites.

Maharashtra continues to hold the top spot with 3.39 million foreign visitors, representing 16.39% of the total foreign arrivals. Gujarat ranks second, with 2.81 million foreign tourists, comprising 14.60% of the total. Bengal's 14.08% share is a clear indicator of its growing prominence on the international tourism map. The state's proximity to international borders and its strategic location in Eastern India also contribute to its increasing popularity.

The rise in foreign tourist numbers for Bengal comes after a series of strategic developments, including improved infrastructure, better accessibility, and marketing efforts that have made the state more attractive to international visitors. The region’s tourism sector saw a marked recovery after 2019, moving up from its earlier position and strengthening its place as a key destination in India.

Looking ahead, Bengal is expected to continue its upward trajectory in the tourism sector. With an increasing number of foreign tourists flocking to the state, it is anticipated that Bengal will see further investments in its tourism infrastructure. This development is likely to boost the state’s economy and solidify its position as a top destination for global travelers in India.
